In short: Situated in the northwestern Peloponnese, Achaea is a region defined by rugged peaks, coastal plains, and a complex history. From the ancient Achaean League to its role as a modern industrial hub, this Greek regional unit balances deep historical roots with the bustling, contemporary life of its capital, Patras.

Achaea is a regional unit of Western Greece, characterized by a diverse landscape that ranges from the coastal plains near the Gulf of Corinth and the Gulf of Patras to the high mountains of the Peloponnese. Peaks such as Aroania, reaching 2341 meters, and Erymanthos, at 2224 meters, dominate the southern interior, while the mountain Panachaiko looms over the capital city of Patras. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate, with hot, sunny summers along the coast and snowy winters in the higher elevations.

The region has been a significant political and cultural center for millennia. In 280/281 BC, the Achaean League was established, eventually expanding to control the entire Peloponnese before its dissolution by Rome following the Battle of Corinth in 146 BC. Later, during the 13th century, the Principality of Achaea was founded as a Crusader state, maintaining influence until its conquest by the Byzantine Empire in 1430. By the 19th century, Achaea played a pivotal role in the Greek War of Independence, with the region liberated by the end of 1821.

Today, Achaea serves as a vital economic center, with Patras functioning as the third-largest city in Greece. The region hosts significant industrial activity, including large-scale brewing and manufacturing facilities. Transportation infrastructure, such as the A5 and A8 motorways and extensive rail connections, links the area to the broader Greek network. Despite its industrial growth, Achaea retains its historical character through sites like the Agia Lavra monastery and its unique geographical features, including the Cave Lakes near Kalavryta.
