In short: Before dominating as a professional catcher, Adley Rutschman was a collegiate placekicker for the Oregon State Beavers. His rapid ascent from a 40th-round draft pick to a first-overall selection highlights a rare trajectory of elite versatility and high-stakes talent.

Adley Rutschman’s path to Major League Baseball was anything but linear. While he is now recognized as a premier catcher, his collegiate years at Oregon State University showcased a remarkable range of athletic ability. During his freshman year, Rutschman served as a placekicker for the Beavers football team, a role entirely distinct from his baseball pursuits.

His baseball career at the collegiate level saw significant growth. In 2018, he helped lead Oregon State to their third NCAA Division I Baseball National Championship, earning the College World Series Most Outstanding Player honors after recording a record 17 hits during the series. Such achievement led to the Baltimore Orioles choosing him first overall during the 2019 MLB draft, securing a historic $8.1 million signing bonus.

Rutschman's professional career has been marked by both exceptional milestones and physical challenges. He achieved a rare feat on Opening Day in 2023, going 5-for-5 with a home run—the first player to do so since 1937. However, his seasons have frequently been interrupted by injuries, including oblique strains in 2025 and various ailments in 2026, such as a concussion and wrist inflammation. Despite these setbacks, his impact remains evident, evidenced by his three All-Star selections and a Silver Slugger Award.

His very moniker reflects a cinematic influence; he earned the name "Rooster" from a specific movie character. Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, featured in Top Gun: Maverick.
