The shortstop who became a record-breaking catcher
In short: In 2010, scouts saw something different in Jacob Tyler Realmuto. Though he was a dominant high school shortstop, a single observation changed his career trajectory. This shift from the infield to behind the plate would eventually lead him to secure the largest contract in Major League Baseball history for a catcher.
Born in Del City, Oklahoma, on March 18, 1991, Realmuto grew up in a highly athletic family. Both his sisters, Amanda and Ryan, caught in college, while his uncle, John Smith, won two Olympic gold medals in wrestling. While Realmuto was a standout multi-sport athlete at Carl Albert High School—playing quarterback in football and power forward in basketball—he primarily served as the baseball team's shortstop.
His professional path changed when Marlins scout Steve Taylor observed him catching during a game. Taylor suggested Realmuto was more likely to reach the Major Leagues as a catcher than a shortstop. The Miami Marlins responded by drafting him during the 2010 MLB draft's third round. He bypassed a commitment to Oklahoma State University to sign with the organization, receiving a $700,000 signing bonus.
Realmuto's ascent was marked by both offensive power and defensive development. After debuting in June 2014, he became the Marlins' starting catcher in 2015, earning Rookie of the Year honors. His career reached a financial milestone in January 2021, when he signed a five-year, $115.5 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, the largest deal ever for a catcher in MLB history.
Throughout his career, Realmuto has been recognized for his dual-threat capabilities. He has earned multiple All-Star selections and Silver Slugger Awards, including in 2018 and 2019. His defensive prowess was further validated with a Gold Glove Award in 2019, cementing his reputation as one of the premier catchers in the league.
