The Evolution of Women's Tag Team Wrestling in All Elite Wrestling
In short: Six years after the promotion was founded, All Elite Wrestling finally introduced a women's world tag team championship. While initially planned for 2019, the title faced significant delays due to roster injuries. Today, this championship represents a milestone in the promotion's commitment to stability and depth within its women's division.
The journey toward the AEW Women's World Tag Team Championship began on June 18, 2019, when AEW President and CEO Tony Khan first announced his intention to create both singles and tag team titles for the women's roster. While the AEW Women's World Championship arrived in 2019 and the AEW TBS Championship followed in 2021, the tag team division remained without a formal title for several years. Khan later clarified during a media scrum on July 12, 2025, that the delay was a strategic decision intended to ensure the division reached a necessary level of stability before introducing a new championship.
The title was officially unveiled on the September 24, 2025, episode of Dynamite. To determine the inaugural champions, AEW organized an eight-team, single-elimination tournament that commenced on October 29, 2025. The tournament concluded on December 10, 2025, at Dynamite: Winter Is Coming, where The Babes of Wrath—comprising Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron—defeated Timeless Love Bombs to secure the historic first reign. The championship belts themselves are modeled after the men's equivalent but feature specific design modifications, including a unique banner and side plates depicting female wrestlers.
As of October 10, 2026, the title has seen three distinct reigns among three different teams. The current champions, The Brawling Birds, consisting of Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor, captured the gold by defeating Divine Dominion at All In on August 30, 2026, in London. Statistically, the title history shows a range of competitive experiences; Divine Dominion holds the record for the longest reign at 168 days, while The Babes of Wrath hold the shortest at 95 days. The division continues to evolve as these athletes define the standard for tag team wrestling within the promotion.
