How a single championship belt evolved through design and drama
In short: Since its 2019 debut, the AEW Women's World Championship has undergone a striking physical and structural transformation. From the original nickel and gold design to diamond-encrusted updates and a new era under Mercedes Moné, the belt's evolution mirrors the high-stakes drama and shifting lineages found within the division's storied history.
The championship's history began with a clear vision. In June 2019, AEW President Tony Khan announced plans for both singles and tag team titles. By October 2, 2019, the inaugural champion, Riho, was crowned during the first broadcast of Dynamite. The original belt featured a gold and nickel design with a small oval center plate, a crown, and six side plates featuring a globe motif.
As the division grew, so did the hardware. In May 2021, to celebrate Hikaru Shida's 370-day reign—then the longest in AEW history—the belt was updated with extra gold plating and diamonds, though it was reduced to four side plates. By March 2022, Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. unveiled a new design by Andre Dorsey. Inspired by the 1980s Mid-South North American Championship, this version featured larger plates and a globe focusing on the Americas, removing the traditional nameplate.
The title's lineage has also seen complex administrative shifts. In late 2022, an interim championship was created after Thunder Rosa suffered a back injury. This led to a period where Toni Storm held the interim title, eventually becoming the official champion after Rosa relinquished the lineage. As of October 2026, the title has seen 18 reigns among 13 champions. At age 22, Riho held the record for youngest titleholder, but Mercedes Moné recently claimed her initial championship by beating Willow Nightingale during All In on 30 August 2026.
