In short: Formed in 1991 by teenagers who did not yet know how to play their instruments, AFI transformed from a local hardcore punk act into a mainstream success. By constantly reinventing their sound across twelve studio albums, they bridged the gap between underground punk roots and theatrical, gothic-influenced alternative rock.

AFI, or A Fire Inside, began in Ukiah, California, in November 1991. Lead vocalist Davey Havok and drummer Adam Carson are the group's sole remaining original members. After a brief breakup in 1993, the band committed to their craft full-time, eventually relocating to Berkeley and living in a decommissioned fraternity house. Their early output, including 1995's Answer That and Stay Fashionable, was rooted in fast, upbeat hardcore punk, a style they later termed 'East Bay hardcore.'

The band’s trajectory shifted significantly as they explored horror punk, post-hardcore, and gothic rock. Their 2003 major-label debut, Sing the Sorrow, proved to be a commercial watershed, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200 and achieving Platinum status. By 2006, Decemberunderground debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, cementing their mainstream reach. Throughout their career, they have drawn inspiration from a vast spectrum of artists, ranging from the Cure and Bauhaus to Metallica and Guns N' Roses.

AFI is noted for a refusal to repeat themselves. Guitarist and producer Jade Puget has emphasized that the band judges every new project on its own merits, arguing that relying on past formulas would stifle their creativity. This evolution has led to critical acclaim for their theatricality and vocal range, with some commentators crediting them with bringing back the '80s-style rock chorus and setting precedents for the visual identity of 2000s rock bands. Despite labels like 'gothic punk' being applied to them, the members have consistently rejected such categorizations as inaccurate.
