In short: The airport serving Algiers today carries a name that reflects a revolution, but its history is rooted in colonial aviation. Once a vital transshipment hub for Allied forces during World War II, it has evolved from a tactical military base into a massive modern gateway for millions of passengers.

Established in 1924 as Maison Blanche Airport, the facility served as a key infrastructure point during the Algerian War of Independence. Its location in the Dar El Beïda area was historically significant; during the conflict, it was frequently referred to in literature as 'White House' Airport. The site eventually became a pivotal military asset for the Allied powers during World War II. In November 1943, the airport played a critical role in the North African Campaign. It served as a major transshipment hub for the United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command, facilitating the movement of cargo, personnel, and aircraft along the Cairo-Dakar transport route. It also functioned as a command and control facility for the Twelfth Air Force, directing combat missions against the German Afrika Korps. Notably, the RAF's No. 43 Squadron used the base for offensive patrols starting in November 1943. Following independence, the airport was renamed in honor of Houari Boumediene, a former president of Algeria. Today, it is managed by the SGSIA, a public company established in 2006 with 2,100 employees. The infrastructure has expanded significantly to meet modern demand, notably with the 2019 opening of Terminal 4. This new facility covers 73 hectares and can accommodate 10 million additional passengers annually, including the ability to handle Airbus A380 aircraft. The airport remains a central node for international travel, connecting Algiers to major hubs in Europe, the Middle East, and beyond.
