How a global partnership shaped the super-medium H175 helicopter
In short: Launched to dominate the medium-utility market, the Airbus H175 is the result of complex international cooperation. From its origins as the Eurocopter EC175 to its Chinese counterpart, the Avicopter AC352, this aircraft balances advanced avionics with specialized roles in offshore oil, search and rescue, and VIP transport.
A medium utility helicopter of the 7-ton class, the H175 was previously called the Eurocopter EC175. Its development was marked by significant international collaboration. Discussions regarding co-developing a fresh medium-heavy twin-engine aircraft commenced with AVIC II in February 2005 by Eurocopter. This led to a formal development contract signed on 5 December 2005 between Eurocopter and Harbin Aircraft Industry Group (HAIG), a subsidiary of AVIC-II.
The project's technical complexity required sophisticated coordination. Using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), partners were able to create virtual mock-ups that bridged the 10,000 km distance between them. While Airbus Helicopters manages the main gearbox, tail rotor, avionics, and flight control systems, HAIG is responsible for the airframe, fuel system, and landing gear. This division of labor continues into production; a 2014 agreement established a 20-year manufacturing split, with 1,000 units to be produced through half-and-half assembly lines operated by Airbus and Avicopter.
The aircraft has achieved notable performance milestones, including FAI-ratified records for its class for time-to-climb at 3 km and 6 km, averaging about one minute per kilometre as of June 2014. While the H175 has seen success in civilian sectors like the oil and gas industry—with operators like Belgian firm Noordzee Helikopters Vlaanderen utilizing it for North Sea operations—it also faces diverse market demands. For instance, the Russian operator UTair placed orders on hold in 2015 due to international sanctions and declining oil prices, while the People's Liberation Army has been linked to potential large-scale orders for the Chinese AC352 variant to modernize its fleet.
