In short: From emergency medical rescues to luxury VIP transport, the Eurocopter EC135 has become a global standard. Since entering service in 1996, this versatile twin-engine helicopter has achieved massive scale, proving that high-performance aviation can be both incredibly quiet and remarkably adaptable for diverse missions.

The EC135, now known as the Airbus Helicopters H135, traces its lineage back to the 1970s. It began as the Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm MBB Bo 108, a technology demonstrator designed to evolve the successful MBB Bo 105. This predecessor introduced groundbreaking aviation tech, including the first helicopter to utilize full-authority digital engine controls (FADEC) and a hingeless main rotor. After its first flight in October 1988, the design was refined with the Fenestron tail rotor system and composite materials, eventually leading to its official EC135 designation following the formation of Eurocopter.

The aircraft's versatility is its primary strength. It is designed for a wide range of roles, including air medical transport (medevac), law enforcement, corporate travel, and military flight training. For instance, its cabin can be configured for mountain rescues to hold two stretchers and a specialized crew, or even outfitted with luxury interiors designed by Hermès. This adaptability is supported by advanced avionics, such as the Helionix suite, which offers features like a four-axis autopilot and single-pilot instrument flight rules certification.

Performance and noise reduction have been central to its success. For over 15 years, the EC135 was recognized as the quietest aircraft in its class, a feat aided by its Fenestron anti-torque device and resonance isolation systems. As of September 2020, the platform has seen massive global adoption, with 1,400 units delivered to 300 operators across 60 countries. This widespread use is reflected in its accumulated flight history, which exceeds 5 million hours, making it a cornerstone of modern civil and military light utility aviation.
