In short: Before becoming a powerhouse in Indian politics, Ajit Singh spent 15 years in the global computer industry. A highly educated technocrat, he transitioned from a career at IBM to a life of agrarian advocacy, eventually shaping the economic reforms that opened India to the global market.

Born in 1939 in Bhadola village, Uttar Pradesh, Ajit Singh was the son of former Indian Prime Minister Charan Singh. While his lineage was deeply rooted in the politics and agriculture of the Hindu Jat community, Singh initially pursued a path in technology. After obtaining a B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur, he completed an M.S. at the Illinois Institute of Technology in the US, he spent 15 years in the computing sector, notably working for IBM throughout the 1960s and early 1970s.

Singh entered Indian politics in 1986, entering the Rajya Sabha after his father became ill. His political career was defined by his role in coalition politics and his dedication to farmers' rights. He founded the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in 1996, a party focused on rural interests in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. His influence spanned several major ministries, including Industry, Food, Agriculture, and Civil Aviation, serving under various administrations including those of V. P. Singh, P. V. Narasimha Rao, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

One of his most significant historical contributions involved his attempt to dismantle the 'License Raj.' While his own draft for a bill against the system was unsuccessful due to political opposition, the same legislative concept was eventually passed by the government of P. V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Manmohan Singh. This legislation became a cornerstone of India's Liberalisation reforms, fundamentally changing the nation's economic relationship with the global market. Singh passed away on 6 May 2021, at age 82, due to COVID-19 complications.
