In short: Beyond the runways and terminals lies a massive technological web. The Airports Authority of India manages not just physical gates, but a sophisticated network of radar, satellite communication, and automated surveillance that ensures safety across the subcontinent and into the surrounding oceans.

Established as a statutory body in 1995 through the Airports Authority of India Act, 1994, the AAI merged two previous entities: the International Airports Authority of India (1972) and the National Airports Authority of India (1986). Operating under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, this Category-1 Public Sector Enterprise manages 137 airports, which comprise 34 international hubs, 81 domestic sites, and 23 civil enclaves situated at defense airfields.

The organization's reach extends far beyond ground infrastructure. Across the Indian landmass and nearby oceanic regions, the organisation delivers Communication Navigation Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) capabilities. This is supported by 29 radar installations at 11 locations and 700 VOR/DVOR installations. By deploying the Automatic Dependence Surveillance System (ADSS) in Chennai and Kolkata, India became the inaugural Southeast Asian nation to utilise satellite communication for oceanic air traffic control via this technology.

Technological advancement is a core pillar of their mandate. AAI is currently implementing the GAGAN project in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to augment GPS signals for precise aircraft navigation. Furthermore, the Radio Construction & Development Unit (RCDU) ensures the lifecycle management and international calibration of critical CNS systems, even extending these calibration services to neighboring countries under bilateral agreements.

Operationally, the AAI is divided into five administrative regions, each with its own headquarters in Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Guwahati. These regions coordinate everything from safety audits and fire training to the management of complex systems like the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance Control System (ASMGCS). This infrastructure ensures that every flight adheres to international ICAO standards and national Civil Aviation Regulations.
