In short: Kempegowda International Airport transformed Bengaluru’s connectivity, evolving from a contentious greenfield project into India’s third-busiest aviation hub. By replacing the landlocked HAL Airport with a sprawling 16-square-kilometre facility, the city unlocked global reach, now serving all six inhabited continents and pioneering parallel runway operations in South India.

The journey to Kempegowda International Airport began in 1991 when a panel identified Devanahalli as the ideal site to replace the congested HAL Airport. The transition was fraught with political and logistical friction, including a massive strike by employees fearing job losses and public rallies protesting the new site's distance from the city. Despite these hurdles, the public-private partnership model—involving the Airports Authority of India and private stakeholders like Fairfax Financial—prevailed. The airport officially opened in May 2008, though its initial capacity estimates were quickly eclipsed by the city's rapid growth.

The airport’s infrastructure has undergone continuous, aggressive expansion to meet surging demand. A major milestone arrived in 2019 with the commissioning of a second runway, followed by the 2022 inauguration of Terminal 2. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as a tribute to Bengaluru’s 'Garden City' identity, this terminal now handles all international flights. By 2025, both runways were upgraded to handle Code-F aircraft, including the massive Airbus A380, and equipped with advanced CAT IIIB ILS technology to ensure operations during low-visibility conditions.

Beyond passenger traffic, the airport has become a critical logistics node. It processes the highest volume of perishable cargo in India, supported by three specialized cargo terminals and a massive fuel farm. With a capacity to handle over 1.4 million tonnes of cargo annually, the facility serves as a vital economic engine for Karnataka. Today, it stands as a testament to the city's ambition, having evolved from a disputed construction site into a sophisticated, solar-powered gateway that connects the tech capital of India to the rest of the world.
