A military airbase serving as a civilian gateway to the Himalayas
In short: Bagdogra is not just an airport; it is a dual-purpose strategic asset. While it serves as the primary entry point for tourists heading to the hill stations of Darjeeling and Gangtok, it simultaneously functions as a critical combat hub for the Indian Air Force.
Operating as a civil enclave within the Bagdogra Air Force Station, the airport manages a complex balance between commercial travel and national defense. It houses the IAF No. 20 Wing and includes specialized units like the No. 8 Squadron, which operates Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 fighter aircraft. This infrastructure is vital for combat air operations across Northern West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bhutan, specifically supporting the Indian Army's XXXIII Corps based in Sukna.
The airport’s growth reflects its role as a major economic hub for Siliguri. It saw a massive 43.6% increase in traffic during the 2014–15 period, crossing the 1 million passenger mark for the first time. By 2019–20, it served 3.2 million passengers, ranking as India's 17th busiest airport. To accommodate this demand, the Government of West Bengal provided land in 2010 to develop night landing capabilities, which were officially permitted by the IAF in 2013.
The future of Bagdogra involves a massive transformation. A new terminal building, designed by CP Kukreja Architects and currently under construction by Kalpataru Projects International Ltd, is expected to be completed by March 2027. With a projected floor area of 1 lakh sq.m. and an investment of ₹3,000 crore, the expansion aims to handle 12.5 million passengers annually. This upgrade will transition the facility from its current limited international status into a full-scale international gateway.
