The $11 billion spreadsheet that evolved into an AI-native powerhouse
In short: Once a simple hybrid of spreadsheet and database, Airtable has undergone a massive transformation. From its 2012 origins in San Francisco to its recent acquisition by Bending Spoons, the platform's journey reflects the broader shift from manual data entry to autonomous AI agents.
Howie Liu, Andrew Ofstad, and Emmett Nicholas established Airtable in 2012 to function as a versatile, hybrid platform. It combines the familiar interface of a spreadsheet with the structural power of a database, allowing users to utilize specific field types like checkboxes, phone numbers, and drop-down lists, as well as file attachments. While users can manually export data via CSVs, the platform does not allow a full database download. Early feature updates included the launch of an API and embedded databases in April 2015, followed by the introduction of forms for data organization in July 2015. By August 2015, the platform also supported Slack integration.
The company's financial trajectory saw explosive growth through several massive funding rounds. After raising $3 million in early 2015, the company secured $735 million in a Series F round in December 2021, which pushed its valuation to $11 billion. This period of expansion was followed by significant restructuring; in December 2022, the company reduced its workforce by one-fifth, laying off 254 employees, with further reductions of 237 staff occurring in September 2023. The company's capital influx was notable, including a $52 million Series B in March 2018 and a $100 million Series C later that year. A $270 million Series E round followed in March 2021.
In recent years, Airtable has pivoted toward artificial intelligence. Following the October 2025 acquisition of DeepSky—an AI research startup—the company hired former OpenAI executive David Azose as CTO. This integration led to the January 2026 launch of Hyperagent (originally Superagent), a standalone system that coordinates specialized AI agents to perform parallel research and analysis tasks. This evolution culminated in June 2025, when the company relaunched as an AI-native application, eventually leading to its $1.3 billion acquisition by Bending Spoons in August 2026. The company's AI capabilities were expanded through a beta program in June 2023. This technological shift was supported by the acquisition of the startup formerly known as Gradient.
