The massive industrial incubator behind India's defense and energy shift
In short: Adani Enterprises isn't just a mining giant; it functions as an in-house incubator for the Adani Group. By nurturing new businesses until they are self-sustainable, it has rapidly diversified into everything from airport operations and solar manufacturing to high-tech drone production and regional aircraft assembly.
Incorporated in 1993 as Adani Exports Limited, the company primarily manages integrated resources, power trading, and natural resources. However, its modern identity is defined by a sprawling portfolio of subsidiaries. It operates across diverse sectors including edible oils, data centers, green hydrogen, and mass media. A key strategic role it plays is acting as an incubator—developing new business units until they reach maturity and can operate independently. The company has made significant strides in India's defense manufacturing. Through its subsidiary Adani Defence & Aerospace, it produces armed drones like the Drishti 10 Starliner UAV and small arms such as the Tavor TAR-21. It also manages a joint venture with Israel’s Elbit Systems to produce Hermes 900 drones in Hyderabad—the only facility of its kind outside Israel.
Furthermore, Adani Defence & Aerospace has entered into major agreements for helicopter ecosystems with Leonardo and aircraft assembly lines with Embraer to support India's Regional Transport Aircraft program. Beyond defense, the company is a major infrastructure player. It manages seven airports in India, including Mumbai International Airport Limited. By November 2020, India's premier producer of integrated modules and solar cells was Adani Solar within the energy sector. The group also maintains a massive international presence, operating mines in Indonesia and Australia, and managing shipping fleets based in Singapore to transport coal globally.
The company's expansion is marked by high-value contracts and strategic partnerships. For instance, it secured an agreement with the Indian Army in September 2026 to supply ammunition for the AK-203 rifle program. It also operates a production-linked incentive program for drone manufacturing and has invested heavily in Australia’s Carmichael coal mine, which became a subject of environmental court challenges as of 2020.
