In short: In 2019, a series of protests at Jawaharlal Nehru University transformed a student leader into a national symbol of resistance. From fighting for library funding to facing a violent campus attack, Aishe Ghosh’s trajectory highlights the high stakes of student activism in modern India.

Aishe Ghosh rose to prominence as the President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union in September 2019. Her leadership was defined by a staunch opposition to the commercialization of public education. She spearheaded protests against fee hikes that made JNU the most expensive central university in India, as well as library funding cuts, hostel shortages, and restrictive dress codes. Her core philosophy centered on the belief that state universities should function as public goods rather than for-profit institutions.

The movement took a violent turn in early 2020. On January 5, 2020, Ghosh suffered a head injury during a campus attack allegedly perpetrated by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, India's largest student organization. The incident gained massive national coverage, leading to her recognition as a prominent figure in the broader nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Despite her visibility, Ghosh faced significant institutional and state friction. In February 2020, she was denied permission to address meetings at two state-run universities in Kolkata and was blocked from holding a rally in West Burdwan. While she was charged with vandalism and assault following the campus incident, no arrests were made. She later alleged a coordinated nexus between the administration, police, and attackers to suppress the movement.

Ghosh's political background is rooted in the Communist Party of India (Marxist). She served as the President of SFI Delhi and was elected all-India joint-secretary of the SFI. Her transition from student activism to formal politics saw her run as the CPI(M) candidate for the Jamuria constituency in the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, where she finished in third place.
