In short: In 1977, a 22-year-old took the reins of a family textile firm. Decades later, Ajay Piramal oversees a massive empire spanning pharmaceuticals, finance, and real estate, driven by a strategic series of high-stakes international acquisitions and calculated divestments.

The trajectory of Ajay Piramal’s leadership began following personal loss. After his father, Gopikisan Piramal, passed away in 1979, and the subsequent loss of his older brother to cancer five years later, Piramal assumed control of the business originally founded by his grandfather, Piramal Chatrabhuj, in 1934. What started in textiles evolved through aggressive expansion, most notably the 1988 acquisition of the Australian multinational Nicholas Laboratories.

His strategy has frequently involved leveraging overseas assets and navigating complex domestic markets. Piramal’s pharmaceutical arm grew by acquiring Indian subsidiaries of major players like Roche, Hoechst Research Centre, and Boehlyer Mannheim. In the financial sector, he demonstrated significant market timing. Between 2011 and 2012, Piramal Enterprises Ltd invested roughly INR 5,863 crore to acquire an 11% stake in Vodafone India. By April 2014, the company sold this stake for INR 8,900 crore, realizing a premium of 51.78% over the original purchase price.

Beyond industry, Piramal’s influence extends to urban development and philanthropy. He repurposed three redundant factory buildings in Mumbai to create Crossroads, India's first major shopping mall. While his business interests are vast, he also dedicates 10–15% of his time to the Piramal Foundation, which operates across 21 Indian states focusing on health, education, and water. His personal life also reflects this scale; in 2012, he acquired the 50,000-square-foot Mumbai residence, Gulita, via auction for $61.2 million, later overseeing a massive renovation completed in 2018.
