A silent T-shaped monument stands where American soldiers once fought in Northern France
In short: Spanning 42 acres in Belleau, the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery serves as a final resting place for soldiers who died during the Great War. This site, maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, honors those lost in the intense combat of Belleau Wood and the subsequent fighting near Château-Thierry.
Dedicated on May 30, 1937, the cemetery is physically structured to resemble a capital T. The stem of this shape is formed by the entrance pathway, while the cross-bars consist of two distinct burial plots. These plots, labeled A and B, contain a total of 2,289 graves, including 250 individuals whose remains could not be identified. Each grave is marked by either a Latin cross or a Star of David, arranged in 13 rows per plot.
The site is anchored by a Memorial Chapel, which sits atop the location of former front-line trenches used to defend Belleau Wood. The structure itself bears the scars of conflict; a hole remains in the wall from a German anti-tank weapon. Inside, the chapel serves as a memorial for the missing, with the names of 1,060 soldiers inscribed on its walls. An inscription above the entrance identifies these men as those who fought in the region but rest in unknown graves.
Among the notable figures interred here are Lieutenant Weedon E. Osborne, a Medal of Honor recipient, and Major Allen Melancthon Sumner, a Marine officer decorated with the Croix de Guerre and Silver Star. The grounds also feature separate monuments dedicated to the United States Marine Corps and the broader American effort at Château-Thierry. By integrating the landscape of the former battlefield with formal burial grounds, the cemetery preserves the memory of the American military presence in France during the summer of 1918.
