Why modern TV avoids filming where real-life history actually happened
In short: The 2020 adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small captures a nostalgic Yorkshire, but it isn't entirely grounded in reality. Producers intentionally bypassed the actual town where the source material unfolded to preserve a specific aesthetic, proving that sometimes, fiction requires a more curated version of truth.
While the series is based on the memoirs of Alf Wight (writing as James Herriot), it deliberately avoids his real-life practice in Thirsk. Producers felt the town had grown too large to maintain the intimate, small-town atmosphere essential to the narrative. Instead, they utilized the village of Grassington in Upper Wharfedale to stand in for the fictional Darrowby, meticulously altering shop signs and removing modern fixtures like satellite dishes and alarm boxes.
The production also navigated a complex geographical legacy. The original 1978 BBC series was filmed in Wensleydale and Swaledale, whereas the 2020 adaptation moved to the Yorkshire Dales around Nidderdale. This shift highlights the tension between historical accuracy and cinematic appeal; while the show captures 'breathtaking' undulating countryside, it relies on a curated landscape of private residences for Skeldale House and rebranded pubs like the Drovers Arms.
Beyond geography, the show balances reality with high-end artifice. Actor Nicholas Ralph underwent veterinary training to ensure authenticity in procedures, yet admitted that for 90 percent of animal scenes, the animals were actually absent, replaced by clever prosthetics or extremely well-trained animals. This blend of rigorous method acting and seamless practical effects ensures the viewer feels the weight of the era without the unpredictability of live nature.
The series also navigates the 'rough edges' of its source material. While the books feature Donald Sinclair—a man whose real-life eccentricity included discharging a shotgun at dinner parties—the TV production softens these traits to fit a premium narrative style. By reimagining characters like Mrs Hall as warmer figures and expanding roles like Helen Alderson, the show prioritizes emotional resonance over strict biographical fidelity.
