Bengaluru prepares for its first major municipal restructuring and civic elections in over a decade
In short: After years without an elected city council, Bengaluru is set to hold its first municipal elections under a new governance model. The Greater Bengaluru Authority now oversees five distinct city corporations, replacing the former administrative structure and introducing a newly delimited map of 369 electoral wards across the capital.
The 2026 elections mark a significant shift in Bengaluru's administration following the dissolution of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike in 2020. The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, established the Greater Bengaluru Authority as an apex body to manage five separate city corporations. This transition required a massive redrawing of boundaries, expanding the city's electoral map to 369 wards. The process was overseen by a delimitation commission, with final ward reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes finalized in March 2026.
The path to these polls has been marked by intense judicial oversight. Since the previous council's term expired in September 2020, the Supreme Court of India has intervened multiple times to mandate the completion of the electoral process. After several extensions, the Court set a final deadline of 31 December 2026. This timeline was influenced by the state's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, a complex verification exercise involving house-to-house checks to identify duplicate or inactive entries, which the government argued was administratively incompatible with holding elections earlier in the year.
Political dynamics have also shifted ahead of the vote. In October 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (Secular) announced a formal alliance under the National Democratic Alliance banner. This partnership means the two parties will field common candidates in each ward rather than competing against one another. As the city prepares for these polls, the focus remains on the logistical challenge of managing the revised electoral rolls and the inaugural election of mayors and deputy mayors, who will serve staggered 30-month terms to cover the corporation's five-year mandate.
