A fire tornado may have leveled hundreds of homes in Jasper
In short: In July 2024, a massive wildfire complex swept through Jasper National Park, destroying hundreds of structures. The devastation was so intense that experts believe a fire tornado may have formed, generating winds capable of causing damage comparable to an EF-4 or EF-5 tornado.
The 2024 Jasper wildfire was a complex of multiple fires that ignited north and south of the Jasper resort town in Alberta, Canada. On July 22, 2024, the situation escalated rapidly when an evacuation order was issued for the entire park, forcing approximately 25,000 residents, workers, and visitors to flee. By July 24, powerful winds pushed the southern fire directly into the townsite, resulting in significant destruction. The crisis began when a wildfire was reported northeast of the townsite. Shortly after, a second blaze was identified to the south.
The impact on the town was profound: of the 1,113 structures in the Jasper townsite, 358 were destroyed. While critical infrastructure—including the hospital, schools, and the wastewater treatment plant—was successfully saved, several landmarks and hostels were lost. The wreckage involved the Athabasca Falls hostels and HI Jasper, plus two religious buildings: St. Mary & St. George Anglican Church alongside the Jasper United Church. The destruction also claimed the Maligne Wilderness Hostel and the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen. Additionally, the Palisades Center suffered major damage, losing eight of its fourteen buildings.
The scale of the blaze was historic, described by Parks Canada as the largest the park has recorded in the last 100 years. While early estimates suggested the complex reached 36,000 hectares, a subsequent aerial survey lowered the estimate to 32,722 hectares by September 7, when the fire was declared under control. The fire was finally declared extinguished on April 1, 2025. Aside from structural ruin, the event caused huge economic losses; insurance payouts reached $880 million, making it among Canada's costliest natural catastrophes. A tragic fatality occurred when a firefighter was struck by a falling tree. This incident led to legal charges against the Ministry of Forestry and Parks regarding safety protocols.
