In short: Alpes-Maritimes is a land of extremes, where the sun-drenched French Riviera meets the rugged, snow-capped summits of the Maritime Alps. This southeastern corner of France, which entirely surrounds the Principality of Monaco, balances a dense coastal conurbation with a vast, sparsely populated interior that remains one of the country's most conservative.

The topography of Alpes-Maritimes is a study in contrasts. While the coastal strip from Cannes to Menton is urbanized and densely populated, the interior is dominated by the high-altitude terrain of the Maritime Alps. The department’s highest point, the Cime du Gélas, reaches 3,143 metres on the border with Italy. This mountainous backbone creates distinct climatic zones: the coast enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine, while the north experiences a true mountain climate with significant snow cover from late November through April.

The department’s political and territorial history is equally complex. Originally a Roman military district established in 14 BC, the modern department was shaped by shifting borders and treaties. It was annexed by France in 1860 following a plebiscite in the County of Nice, though Tende and La Brigue were not incorporated until 1947. Today, it remains a political stronghold for the right, with the Republican party holding 52 of the 54 seats in the departmental council following the 2021 election.

Beyond its political landscape, the region has faced challenges, including high-profile corruption scandals involving mayors in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite this, it remains a premier destination, drawing visitors to its alpine ski resorts like Valberg and Isola 2000, as well as its historic coastal cities. The region’s identity is deeply tied to this dual nature—a place where one can experience violent autumn storms and Mediterranean heat, all while looking up at a 62-kilometre-long barrier of snow-covered peaks.
