The cashierless Amazon Go stores were actually powered by a thousand human reviewers
In short: Amazon Go promised a futuristic, fully automated shopping experience where customers simply grabbed items and walked out. While the company touted computer vision and deep learning, the reality behind the curtain involved hundreds of human workers manually verifying transactions. The ambitious chain ultimately closed its doors in early 2026.
Amazon Go launched with the promise of a seamless, cashierless retail experience. The concept relied on a sophisticated blend of sensor fusion, computer vision, and deep learning algorithms to track items as customers moved through the store. By using a smartphone app to generate a QR code for entry, shoppers could pick up products, which were added to a virtual cart, and simply walk out. If an item was returned to the shelf, the system would automatically remove it from the bill. The technology, branded as Just Walk Out, was designed to eliminate the need for traditional checkout lines.
Despite the high-tech marketing, the system was not as autonomous as it appeared. In 2024, it was revealed that approximately 1,000 workers in India were responsible for manually reviewing a significant portion of transactions to ensure accuracy. This reliance on human intervention highlighted the limitations of the automated sensors, which struggled with complex scenarios such as tracking multiple users with similar body types or managing items moved by children. These technical hurdles were evident early on; the initial prototype in Seattle faced significant delays because the system could not reliably track more than 20 people simultaneously.
The chain expanded into various formats, including the larger Amazon Go Grocery stores, and eventually reached locations in the United States and the United Kingdom. However, the project faced challenges beyond technology. Concerns regarding the exclusion of low-income shoppers led to legislation in cities like San Francisco and Philadelphia, forcing some stores to begin accepting cash. By 2023, Amazon began closing several locations. Ultimately, on January 27, 2026, the company announced the closure of all remaining Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, opting to shift its focus toward expanding its Whole Foods operations. The era of the cashierless Amazon convenience store ended completely by February 1, 2026.
