From community markets to the halls of state power
In short: Angie Nixon’s political trajectory is defined by a transition from grassroots community building to high-stakes legislative advocacy. By blending business ownership with labor organizing, she has moved from opening local shops to challenging state-level redistricting and seeking a seat in the United States Senate.
Angie Nixon’s political identity is rooted in the Moncrief neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. Raised by a single mother who worked two jobs, Nixon pursued a degree in political science from the University of Florida in 2007. Her early career was marked by local engagement, including an unsuccessful 2008 run for Jacksonville City Council and subsequent work as a legislative aide. By 2020, she successfully entered the Florida House of Representatives, defeating incumbent Kimberly Daniels in a primary election for District 14.
Nixon’s legislative career has been characterized by direct action and labor advocacy. In 2022, she attempted a sit-in to protest congressional redistricting maps, a move that led to her being redrawn into District 13. Having previously led positions within the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), she now manages Florida For All, a six-organisation group dedicated to voter rights. Her legislative record includes introducing a 2023 resolution regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which was rejected by the House with a vote of 2 against 104.
Beyond the legislature, Nixon has utilized entrepreneurship as a tool for community organizing. She co-founded the Melanin Market to support small businesses and opened Cafe Resistance in 2024, a space specifically designed to counter state repression of African-American history through literature. Her 2026 campaign for the U.S. Senate highlights her shift toward socialist and labor-centric policies, including a $25 minimum wage and universal health care, following a significant upset victory in the Democratic primary.
