The Tijuana Tornado who fought through a fractured orbital bone
In short: Antonio Margarito was defined by an almost supernatural durability and a relentless pressure style. Known as El Tornado de Tijuana, he endured some of the most brutal beatings in modern boxing history, including a fight where he suffered a fractured orbital bone but continued to compete for 12 rounds.
Born in Torrance, California, and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Antonio Margarito turned professional at just 15 years old. His early career was driven by financial necessity, leading him to quickly establish himself as a formidable welterweight. During the period of 2002–2007, he possessed the WBO belt, followed by the IBF crown in 2008 and the WBA (Super) title between 2008 and 2009. His fighting style was characterized by aggressive forward pressure and a 'world-class' chin that allowed him to absorb heavy power shots.
Margarito’s career was marked by both legendary feats and significant controversy. In 2006, he set a Compubox all-time record by throwing 1,675 punches in a single twelve-round bout, despite fighting with an injured ankle. However, his reputation was also tarnished when he was banned for one year after being caught using illegal hand wraps containing gypsum (calcium sulfate), which formed plaster of Paris inside his gloves.
The most harrowing chapter of his career occurred during his 2010 fight against Manny Pacquiao at Cowboys Stadium. Despite having a significant physical advantage—including a 17-pound weight edge and a six-inch reach advantage—Margarito was dominated for 12 rounds. He suffered serious eye damage, including a fractured left orbital bone that required surgery. This injury nearly prevented him from being relicensed by the New York State Athletic Commission, as his right eye remained swollen shut until he eventually retired in 2012.
Margarito's career serves as a study in physical endurance and the high-stakes mechanics of professional boxing. From his debut at age 15 to his final comeback fight in 2017, he navigated a landscape of lucrative 'super-fights,' weight-drain issues, and severe physical trauma, ultimately becoming one of the most recognizable figures in the sport's history.
