From advertising jingles to cinematic anthems: the versatile evolution of Amit Trivedi
In short: Before winning National Film Awards, Amit Trivedi was composing jingles for McDonald's and playing local gigs with his college fusion band. Discover how a background in theatre and advertising transformed into one of India's most celebrated musical careers.
Born in Bandra, Mumbai, in 1979, Amit Trivedi’s musical journey began far from the film studio spotlight. His early career was defined by a diverse range of commercial and independent projects, including composing advertising jingles for brands like Airtel and McDonald's, as well as providing background music for television and programming for Marathi films. During his college years, he performed in 'Om the Fusion Band' alongside collaborators such as Amartuna Bobo Rahut and Shriram Iyer. His family roots can be traced back to Ahmedabad, Gujarat. During his school years, he first developed a fascination with electronic musical instruments.
Trivedi’s transition into mainstream Hindi cinema was catalyzed by the 2008 film Aamir. Following a recommendation from Kashyap, he worked with director Raj Kumar Gupta to align the film's soundtrack with its narrative. While Aamir marked his debut, the 2009 soundtrack for Dev.D served as a pivotal turning point in his professional trajectory. This era of rapid success saw him earning multiple Filmfare Award nominations for works such as Wake Up Sid, Ishaqzaade, and Lootera. At the 55th Filmfare Awards, he secured both the Best Background Score and the R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent. He also earned his first nomination for Best Music Director during this period.
His versatility extends beyond film scores to sports and television. In 2009, he composed the 'Game for More' anthem for the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team. He has also composed the official anthem for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and provided the title track for the Amitabh Bachchan-hosted show, Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi. Today, he continues to expand his musical footprint through his independent label, AT Azaad. His recent work includes scores for films like Haseen Dillruba and Uunchai. He also achieved the Best7 Music Director of the Year award in 2019.
