How a Greek Midfielder Became a Defining Figure in Turkish and Greek Football
In short: Anastasios Bakasetas has carved a unique path across European leagues, evolving from a promising youth talent at Asteras Tripolis into a seasoned captain for the Greek national team. His career is marked by high-stakes goals, championship titles, and a reputation for delivering under pressure in both Turkey and Greece.
Born in 1993, Anastasios Bakasetas began his professional journey within the youth ranks of Asteras Tripolis, making his Super League debut in November 2010. Following loan spells at Thrasyvoulos and Aris, he gained significant momentum at Panionios before securing a move to AEK Athens in 2016. His tenure at AEK proved pivotal, as he played a crucial role in securing the club's first Super League title since 1994 with a decisive two-goal performance against Levadiakos in April 2018.
In 2019, Bakasetas transitioned to the Turkish Süper Lig, joining Alanyaspor for an estimated €700,000. He quickly established himself as a prolific attacking midfielder, recording 21 goals and 12 assists in 64 appearances. His impact in Turkey continued after a 2021 move to Trabzonspor, where he frequently decided matches with crucial goals, including a winner against Denizlispor on his debut. His performance during this period earned him recognition as the Best Greek Player playing abroad for both the 2019–20 and 2021–22 seasons.
Beyond his club success, Bakasetas has been a central figure for the Greek national team. He made his international debut in 2016 and has since become a vital presence, notably scoring a penalty against Spain in 2021 and a decisive goal against Sweden during the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign. After a return to Greece with Panathinaikos in 2024, he signed with APOEL in September 2026. His career trajectory reflects a consistent ability to adapt to new environments while maintaining a high standard of play, cementing his status as a key tactical asset in modern football.
