From Asteras Tripolis to International Captain: The Professional Journey of Dimitrios Kourbelis
In short: Dimitrios Kourbelis has navigated a decade of professional football, evolving from a defensive midfielder at Asteras Tripolis to a seasoned captain at Panathinaikos. His career is defined by rapid adaptation, significant transfer interest from European clubs, and a resilient return to his roots after playing abroad in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
Born on 2 November 1993, Dimitrios Kourbelis began his professional trajectory at Asteras Tripolis, where he reached a milestone of 100 appearances by May 2015. His consistent performance earned him a move to Panathinaikos in December 2016. The transfer, valued at approximately €700,000 including bonuses, saw him quickly establish himself as a starter. By the 2017–18 season, following the departure of Zeca, Kourbelis was appointed captain, a testament to his rapid integration and leadership within the squad.
The midfielder's tenure at Panathinaikos was marked by both high-level interest and physical adversity. In January 2018, he became the subject of intense transfer speculation, with Italian clubs like Genoa and Sampdoria, as well as domestic rival PAOK, expressing interest in acquiring him. Despite the financial struggles of Panathinaikos, he remained with the club. His career was later interrupted by a significant injury in December 2020—a tear in the abductor muscle—which sidelined him for 425 days until his return in February 2022.
Beyond his club career, Kourbelis became a fixture for the Greece national team, debuting in June 2017 during a World Cup qualification match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. His professional path eventually took him outside Greece, with stints in Turkey at Trabzonspor and Fatih Karagümrük, followed by a move to the Saudi Pro League club Al-Khaleej in 2024. In July 2026, Kourbelis returned to Asteras Tripolis, the club where his professional journey originally began, closing a circle that spanned multiple countries and high-stakes competitions.
