Born in Athens on 11 December 1997, Mavropanos's professional foundations were laid at Apollon Smyrnis, where he spent eight years in the youth system. His transition to senior football began in earnest at PAS Giannina, where he arrived in January 2016. During his tenure there, he proved his capability as a goal-scoring defender, notably scoring a decisive winner against Asteras Tripolis in August 2017.
A major turning point occurred on 4 January 2018, when Arsenal signed him for a reported €2.1 million. While his time in London included high-profile moments—such as a clean sheet in Arsène Wenger's final home game—it was also marked by physical setbacks, including a significant groin injury in late 2018. Seeking consistent minutes, he moved to Germany, first on loan to 1. FC Nürnberg in 2020 and later to VfB Stuttgart.
At Stuttgart, Mavropanos flourished, eventually triggering a permanent transfer clause of €3.5 million. His performances in the Bundesliga, characterized by powerful long-range strikes and defensive stability, paved the way for his landmark €25 million move to West Ham United in August 2023. This transfer was notable for a 10% sell-on clause benefiting Arsenal.
Mavropanos has since become a historic figure for West Ham, being the first Greek player to represent the club. His 2025–26 season was particularly dominant; after scoring against his former club, Arsenal, and finding the net against Manchester City, he was voted the club's Hammer of the Year by supporters.
