In short: Founded in 2015, the Orlando Pride endured years of roster instability, coaching turmoil, and defensive struggles. Yet, through strategic rebuilding and a commitment to player welfare, the team recently shattered its own history, securing both the NWSL Shield and the NWSL Championship to become the city's first major professional titleholders.

The Orlando Pride entered the National Women's Soccer League in 2016, established by Orlando City SC ownership to mirror the identity of their men's club. The name itself serves a dual purpose: honoring the city of Orlando while referencing a pride of lions, specifically highlighting the role of lionesses. Despite early optimism and the acquisition of stars like Alex Morgan and Marta, the team struggled with consistency, player absences, and defensive fragility. By 2019, the club faced significant challenges, including a league-record 53 goals conceded in a single season and the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced their withdrawal from the 2020 Challenge Cup.

The club's trajectory shifted following a 2021 ownership change, when the team was sold to the Wilf family in a deal valued between $400 and $450 million. This period was marked by internal volatility, including the termination of head coach Amanda Cromwell in 2022 for retaliation and workplace misconduct. However, the appointment of Seb Hines as permanent head coach and Haley Carter as general manager in 2023 signaled a new era. The organization prioritized player welfare and strategic recruitment, bringing in talents like Barbra Banda and solidifying their defensive core.

These efforts culminated in a historic 2024 campaign. The Pride remained unbeaten for 24 regular-season matches, clinching the NWSL Shield in October before defeating the Washington Spirit in the playoffs to claim the NWSL Championship. This victory marked a milestone for Orlando sports, as the Pride became the first team from the city to capture a major professional championship. Following this success, the club continued its evolution in 2026 by appointing Yolanda Thomas as interim head coach, making her the first Black woman to lead an NWSL side.
