How a small Minnesota gym experiment grew into a global 24-hour fitness empire
In short: Three entrepreneurs turned a local gym into a worldwide franchise by listening to what members actually wanted. From a single site in Cambridge, Minnesota, to a massive merger with Orangetheory Fitness, Anytime Fitness redefined the industry by staying open every hour of every day for its members.
The origins of Anytime Fitness trace back to the early 1990s, when founders Chuck Runyon, Dave Mortensen, and Jeff Klinger met while working at a St. Paul fitness club. Their partnership solidified in 1995 when they acquired the Southview Athletic Club. During their seven-year tenure, they grew the club from 500 to 4,000 members and conducted surveys to understand the specific needs of gym-goers. This research led them to launch the Anytime Fitness concept in 2002, prioritizing accessibility through 24-hour, year-round operations.
The franchise model expanded rapidly after the first location opened in Cambridge, Minnesota. By 2009, the company reached 1,000 clubs, and by 2018, it boasted over 4,200 locations across 32 countries. The company's growth strategy included forming an umbrella organization, Self Esteem Brands, in 2012 to diversify into other personal care services like Waxing The City and Basecamp Fitness. This corporate structure allowed for significant scaling, culminating in a 2024 merger with Orangetheory Fitness to form Purpose Brands, a massive entity with over 7,000 locations and $3.5 billion in combined sales.
Beyond its business metrics, the brand is known for a unique corporate culture. An estimated 4,000 members and employees have tattooed the company logo on their bodies, a practice supported by the company, which provides a tattoo artist at training events. The gyms themselves are designed with a standardized layout, featuring cardiovascular machines in the center, free weights in the back, and functional training equipment along the walls. This consistency, combined with the ability for members to access any location globally, has helped the brand maintain its position as a dominant force in the international fitness market.
