The Irish boxer who conquered America without a single piece of borrowed gear
In short: Before he was a WBO middleweight champion, Andy Lee arrived in Detroit with nothing but a mouthpiece and borrowed boots. From the streets of London to the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, discover the remarkable journey of a fighter who broke historical barriers.
Born in London in 1984 to Irish Traveller parents, Andy Lee’s path to professional boxing was defined by movement and mentorship. After his family moved to County Limerick in 1998, Lee’s talent flourished at St Francis ABC. His career was shaped significantly by the legendary trainer Emanuel Steward, whom Lee signed with in 2005. The bond was so intense that Lee moved to Detroit to train at the famed Kronk Gym, famously once insisting on sparring an undefeated opponent despite suffering from jet lag.
Lee’s professional ascent was marked by historic milestones. In 2014, under the guidance of trainer Adam Booth, he captured the WBO middleweight title. Beyond securing the belt, this triumph marked Lee's status as the initial Irish fighter to claim a world championship in the US since 1934. He also holds the distinction of being the first member of the travelling community to secure a major world title.
His championship reign was characterized by high-stakes drama and controversial finishes. While he successfully defeated Matt Korobov in Las Vegas in 2014 via a 6th-round TKO, his later bouts were more turbulent. A 2015 title defense against Billy Joe Saunders in Manchester ended in a close majority decision loss, and a high-profile clash against Peter Quillin resulted in a split draw after a bout marred by Quillin stepping on Lee's foot. Lee officially retired in February 2018, transitioning into a successful career as a trainer and pundit.
Beyond the ring, Lee’s legacy is tied to his family and resilience. As the second cousin of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, he remains a prominent figure in the sport. Since retiring, he has applied his expertise to training fighters like Jason Quigley and Joseph Parker, ensuring his influence on the ring continues long after his final professional bout.
