How a gym brand built a fitness empire by banning the 'lunk' behavior
In short: Planet Fitness transformed the gym industry by targeting casual users rather than elite athletes. By branding itself as a Judgement Free Zone, it discouraged intimidating behaviors like grunting or dropping heavy weights. This strategy, paired with unconventional perks like free pizza, helped the company grow into a massive international franchise.
The origins of Planet Fitness trace back to 1992, when Michael and Marc Grondahl purchased a struggling Gold's Gym in Dover, New Hampshire. After rebranding to Coastal Fitness, they eventually acquired the rights to the name Planet Fitness in 2002 from Rick Berks, who had launched his own gym under that name in 1993. The name itself was inspired by a school project created by Berks' daughter. Over the following decades, the company underwent significant corporate shifts, including an equity partnership with TSG Consumer Partners in 2013 and an initial public offering in 2015.
Central to the brand's identity is the concept of the Judgement Free Zone, which specifically aims to welcome first-time or occasional gym users. To maintain this environment, the company famously implemented a lunk alarm—a siren and flashing light triggered by behavior perceived as intimidating, such as loud grunting or dropping weights. This approach has drawn criticism from some fitness experts, particularly in a 2010 Men's Health article that argued the prohibition of effective exercises like deadlifts alienates serious weightlifters. Despite this, the model proved highly successful, leading to a network of approximately 2,715 clubs across several countries.
The company has also navigated significant operational challenges, most notably during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. After closing its facilities on March 18, 2020, the firm faced backlash for continuing to process membership dues, though it eventually halted charges and committed to reimbursements. While the company successfully reopened its locations, many have not returned to the 24-7 operating hours that were standard before the shutdown. Recently, the brand has sought to broaden its appeal beyond casual users by adding new equipment and amenities, signaling a shift to accommodate a wider spectrum of fitness levels while continuing community-focused initiatives like the High School Summer Pass program.
