The massive frontier county that once served as a Cold War strategic hub
In short: Spanning over 6,800 square miles, Maine's Aroostook County is larger than three entire states combined. Once a vital frontier for refugees and the Underground Railroad, this northernmost region evolved from a lumber-dominated landscape into a strategic military stronghold during the Cold War.
Aroostook County, known locally as "The County," occupies a massive 6,828 square miles along the Canada–United States border. It ranks as Maine's biggest county and the second-largest east of the Mississippi, trailing only St. Louis County, Minnesota. Its vast, rural landscape has historically shaped its identity, serving as a refuge for Acadians and Wolastoqiyik people fleeing colonial conflict and oppressive governments.
During the Cold War, the county's geography became a matter of global security. Loring Air Force Base, established in 1953, was chosen for its strategic proximity to the Middle East, Europe, and the Soviet Union. The base was a massive operation for the Strategic Air Command, capable of housing one hundred large bombers, including the Convair B-36 Peacemaker and the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. It featured the largest fuel storage capacity of any SAC base, holding 9,200,000 US gallons, and a weapons storage capacity of 4,700 tonnes NEW.
The region's cultural fabric is deeply tied to its borderland history. The name "Aroostook" is derived from the Wolastoqey word for "beautiful river," referring to the Saint John River. Today, the area maintains a distinct identity through its Acadian heritage, with many residents in the Saint John Valley being bilingual in English and Acadian French. While the economy has shifted from lumber to potato cultivation and wind power, the county remains a vital, sparsely populated corner of the American landscape.
