In short: Before it was a commercial hub, Presque Isle was a contested territory. Caught between the United States and British North America, this Maine city rose from a landscape of lumber mills and disputed boundaries to become a site of historic transatlantic achievements.

The identity of Presque Isle is rooted in its geography; its name is derived from the French term for peninsula, describing the land formed by the Aroostook River and the Presque Isle Stream. This area was once the subject of intense geopolitical tension. In the early 1800s, frontier conflicts involving the United Kingdom and the United States prevented pioneers from securing land titles. While British Loyalists arrived in 1819 seeking lumber, they could not secure titles due to these conflicts. The tension eventually escalated into the Aroostook War in 1838, a conflict only resolved in 1842 through the Webster-Ashburton Treaty.

The territory's growth was spurred by the Massachusetts authorities, who held jurisdiction over the region then. In the 1820s, Massachusetts encouraged settlement by offering land grants and mill privileges. The first American settler, Dennis Fairbanks, established himself in 1828. Originally known as Fairbanks, the township was eventually incorporated as Presque Isle on April 4, 1859, after being carved from Plantations F, G, and H.

As the region stabilized, its economy shifted from the early lumber industry of the 1880s to a heavy reliance on agriculture. By the final three decades of the 19th century, the entire county became famous for potato production. This agricultural importance was bolstered by the opening of a starch factory in 1874. Today, Presque Isle remains the largest city in Aroostook County and serves as the headquarters for the Mi'kmaq Nation, a federally recognized tribe.
