The world's second largest multi-sport event for disabled athletes
In short: While the Olympics and Paralympics are often paired in a single city, the Asian Para Games operate under a different structural reality. Despite sharing a similar spirit of inclusivity, these games remain independent entities, governed by their own specific contracts and organizational committees.
The Asian Para Games, frequently referred to as the Para Asiad, serves as a premier multi-sport competition for athletes with physical disabilities across Asia. Recognized by the International Paralympic Committee, it ranks as the second largest multi-sport event globally, trailing only the Paralympic Games. The inaugural edition took place in 2010 in Guangzhou, China, marking the transition from the previous FESPIC Games which served the broader Asia Pacific region.
A notable structural nuance exists between these games and their able-bodied counterparts. While the Olympic and Paralympic models typically mandate that both events occur in the same host city, the Asian Para Games are not currently included in the official host city contracts for the Asian Games. This means that while they often share a venue for convenience, they remain legally and organizationally independent. They can be organized by different committees and held in entirely separate cities if desired.
The history of the competition is rooted in the dissolution of the FESPIC Federation in November 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This led to the merger with the Asian Paralympic Council, which was subsequently renamed the Asian Paralympic Committee. Since then, forty-four nations have participated in the Games, with China emerging as the only nation to ever claim the overall championship title.
The event continues to evolve through cultural representation and youth development. Every edition features a unique mascot—often fictional animals or human figures representing local heritage—designed to engage younger audiences. Additionally, the Asian Youth Para Games, which began in 2009 in Tokyo, provides a dedicated platform for junior athletes with disabilities, following a similar trajectory of superseding older regional competitions.
