In short: The Asian Le Mans Series is a masterclass in persistence. From being scrapped in 2001 due to low interest to recording the smallest grid in ACO-sanctioned history, it has constantly pivoted, rebranded, and expanded across continents to keep the spirit of endurance racing alive.

The journey to the Asian Le Mans Series (AsLMS) was fraught with logistical hurdles. Initial plans for an Asian-Pacific series were conceived by Don Panoz in 2000 but were scrapped when the European Le Mans Series failed to attract enough entrants. The Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) later attempted to build its own championship in 2006, but the Japan Le Mans Challenge folded after just two seasons. It wasn't until 2009 that the series truly took root with its inaugural 1000 km of Okayama.

The series has faced significant growing pains regarding participation. In 2013, the ACO expected 16-18 cars for the relaunch, but only 8 showed up, marking the smallest grid in ACO-sanctioned racing. This record was later broken in 2014 when only six cars started the first race at Inje. These low car counts forced the ACO to take over organization from the S2M Group in 2014 to stabilize the series and manage cancellations, such as a scheduled round in Thailand.

Today, the series is defined by its adaptability. It has expanded beyond Asia to Australia in 2020 and the Middle East in 2021, while preparing for a major shift in 2026–27. This upcoming season will introduce a Hypercar class for non-factory privateer entries and see the series travel to Europe for the first time, rebranding as the Winter Le Mans Series due to logistical issues in the Middle East. Throughout its history, it has maintained a 'Pro-Am' structure, requiring at least one amateur-rated driver and one driver of Asian nationality per car.
