From news anchor to Congress: the political ascent of Ashley Hinson
In short: A former broadcast journalist and two-time Emmy Award winner, Ashley Hinson now serves as a U.S. representative for Iowa. Her political career has spanned from the Iowa House to the U.S. House, where she focuses on agricultural policy, infrastructure, and taxation while preparing for a 2026 Senate bid.
Ashley Hinson, born on June 27, 1983, in Des Moines, Iowa, transitioned from a career in broadcast journalism to federal politics. After working as a camera operator and editor for WOI-TV in Des Moines and an anchor for KCRG-TV for more than ten years—earning two regional Emmy Awards—she entered the political arena. She first won a seat in the Iowa House of Representatives in 2016, representing the 67th district. She belonged to the Pi Beta Phi sorority during her studies. Additionally, she completed her studies in broadcast journalism at the University of Southern California.
Her path to the U.S. House of Representatives began with a narrow victory in the 2020 election, where she defeated Democratic incumbent Abby Finkenauer by more than 10,000 votes. Following redistricting, Hinson transitioned from representing the 1st district to the 2nd district in late 2021. Her legislative focus has included infrastructure, taxation, and agricultural policy, notably through the introduction of the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, later modified as the Save Our Bacon (SOB) Act. She is currently the Republican nominee for the 2026 United States Senate election. This race aims to replace the retiring Republican incumbent, Joni Ernst.
Hinson's political stance has evolved on certain international issues. Although she once backed President Trump's constitutional command over military operations, she demanded an immediate conclusion to the Iranian conflict by September 2026. She argued that the conflict was placing an economic burden on Iowans, specifically regarding diesel and gasoline prices, which are critical to Iowa's agricultural economy. Her political career also includes serving on the Judiciary, Public Safety, and Transportation Committees. She previously held the position of chair for these committees.
