Assassin's Creed Mirage returns to the series' roots in 9th-century Baghdad
In short: Moving away from the sprawling role-playing scale of recent installments, Assassin's Creed Mirage shrinks the map to focus on stealth, parkour, and classic assassination mechanics. Set during the Islamic Golden Age, the game follows Basim Ibn Ishaq as he navigates the internal politics of the Abbasid Caliphate and his own mysterious past.
Developed primarily by Ubisoft Bordeaux, Mirage was originally conceived as an expansion for Assassin's Creed Valhalla before being reworked into a standalone title. Released in October 2023, the game serves as a tribute to the franchise's 15th anniversary, prioritizing a linear, story-driven experience that lasts approximately 15 to 20 hours. By adopting the 'Black Box' design, the game encourages players to explore dense urban environments to identify unique ways to eliminate targets, echoing the structure of older titles like Unity and Syndicate.
The game is set in 9th-century Baghdad, a city divided into four distinct districts: the Round City, Karkh, Abassiyah, and Harbiyah. To ensure historical authenticity, the developers included an educational database featuring artifacts from institutions like the David Collection and the Institut du Monde Arabe, supported by academic experts and grants from the Barakat Trust. This commitment to history extends to the inclusion of figures such as the Banū Mūsā brothers and the Zanj Rebellion leader Ali ibn Muhammad.
Mechanically, Mirage introduces 'Assassin Focus', a system that allows players to mark and eliminate multiple enemies in quick succession. Basim’s mobility is supported by refined parkour animations, with the team drawing inspiration from the movement of samurai and ninjas. While the game was initially released without post-launch plans, it later received a free expansion in November 2025 titled Valley of Memory, which added six hours of content centered on the ancient city of al-Ula in Saudi Arabia.
By January 2024, the game had reportedly reached 5 million players and generated an estimated $250 million in revenue. By November 2025, Ubisoft confirmed the title had grown to 10 million players. Despite some criticism regarding the protagonist's characterization and reliance on series lore, the game was widely praised for its dense world design and successful return to the stealth-focused gameplay that defined the franchise's early years.
