A journey through the Ottoman Empire and the memories of Masyaf
In short: In Assassin's Creed Revelations, the world expands beyond the streets of Constantinople. While Ezio Auditore navigates a war of succession in the Ottoman capital, players also dive into the past through the eyes of Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad, uncovering secrets hidden within the ancient landscapes of Masyaf and Cappadocia.
The story revolves around the recollections of three separate characters: Desmond Miles, Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad, and Ezio Auditore. While Ezio serves as the primary protagonist, his journey takes him to Constantinople during the rise of the Ottoman Empire. This setting is roughly similar in size to Rome from the previous title, Brotherhood, and offers players the ability to renovate landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapı Palace, and the Galata Tower to increase passive income. Players can also purchase various shops, including apothecaries and bookshops, to improve the city's economy. Additionally, the gameplay includes a bomb crafting mechanic to assist in combat and distraction.
The exploration of Constantinople is complemented by flashback missions set in Masyaf. These sequences allow players to control Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad during a specific historical window from 1189 to 1257. These memories are unlocked as Ezio seeks five keys required to open a library built by Altaïr. These historical sequences are triggered once Ezio retrieves the necessary keys. This allows for a deeper connection to the origins of the Assassin order.
Beyond these historical settings, the game features a modern-day framing story. Desmond Miles, the series' lead, travels through Animus Island, the digital hub of the Animus core. This environment provides a unique gameplay experience through first-person platforming and puzzle-solving levels, which are accessed via data fragments or the The Lost Archive expansion. This digital space serves as a mini-hub for the protagonist. It offers a distinct departure from the standard third-person perspective used elsewhere.
The game's setting is not limited to these three hubs; the story also takes the player to Cappadocia, further expanding the geographical scope of the Ezio trilogy's conclusion. The game's multiplayer component also features diverse maps, including locations on the island of Rhodes. This mode allows players to climb the ranks of the Abstergo Templars.
