The last grand tourer crafted by hand in Newport Pagnell
In short: Before the era of mass production, the first-generation Aston Martin V12 Vanquish served as a final masterpiece of traditional British craftsmanship. It was a car so significant that its production ended precisely as one of the marque's most historic factories closed its doors forever.
Debuting at the Geneva Motor Show, Ian Callum's V12 Vanquish replaced the Virage starting in 2001. To create a premier grand tourer, engineers built a custom bonded aluminium composite frame using a carbon fibre spine co-developed with Lotus. This construction allowed for a high-performance 5,935 cc naturally aspirated V12 engine that produced 460 hp and a top speed of 190 mph.
The car is historically significant as the last all-new model to be manufactured at Aston Martin's Newport Pagnell facility. While techniques had evolved since earlier eras, assembly and finishing remained largely hand-done, making each vehicle time-consuming to produce. This dedication to craft limited production numbers but solidified its reputation as a serious alternative to top-tier Italian supercars of the time.
The Vanquish's legacy is cemented in pop culture, notably appearing in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day. In the movie, it was equipped with an array of gadgets including machine guns, tire spikes, and a cloaking device. The model eventually gave way to the DBS in 2007, but its influence persists through various iterations, including a second-generation model launched in 2012 based on the VH platform.
The lineage continues today with specialized projects like the Vanquish 25—a restoration package by Ian Callum Design intended to modernize the original V12 for the 2020s. Only 25 of these will be produced, featuring a tuned engine outputting 580 hp, ensuring that the spirit of the original flagship remains a benchmark for British luxury engineering.
