In short: Formed in 1901, the Australian Army began as a collection of separate colonial forces. For decades, it relied on part-time soldiers and volunteer expeditionary units because reservists were barred from overseas service. Today, it stands as a professional land warfare force with a complex history of global engagement and peacekeeping.

The Australian Army was established in March 1901 following the Federation of Australia, amalgamating six distinct colonial military forces. Initially, the force was composed almost entirely of part-time soldiers in the Citizens Military Force. Because these reservists could not be forced to serve abroad, Australia developed a tradition of raising separate volunteer expeditionary forces, such as the First Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during the First World War. This structural reliance on volunteers persisted until 1947, when a standing peacetime regular army was finally formed.

Throughout the 20th century, the Army’s relationship with conscription was deeply contentious. The Universal Service Scheme, introduced in 1911, mandated training for males aged 14 to 26 but strictly prohibited overseas service. Later, during the Vietnam War, the government implemented a controversial 'birthday ballot' to select 20-year-old males for conscription, sparking significant public protest. These internal debates over manpower and service obligations often mirrored the Army's shifting operational focus, which moved from defending the British Empire in the Boer War to major Pacific campaigns against Japan in the Second World War.

Since 1947, the Army has increasingly balanced its combat roles with international peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. From the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War to the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War, the force has evolved its operational doctrine. Today, the Army remains a key component of the Australian Defence Force, providing disaster relief and participating in multilateral exercises, marking a significant departure from its origins as a loose collection of colonial militias.
