The British sitcom that broke BBC Three's comedy viewing records
In short: In 2012, a comedy about the worst teacher in Britain set new viewing records for BBC Three. From the chaotic classrooms of Abbey Grove to a successful feature film, follow the journey of Class K, including a surprising revival where former students return to take over the teaching duties.
Starting in August 2012, Bad Education depicts the mishaps of Alfie Wickers, an upper-class history tutor recently finished with university at Hertfordshire's imaginary Abbey Grove School. Jack Whitehall's script originally centres on Wickers' efforts to seem 'cool' for his interest, Rosie Gulliver, amidst a chaotic secondary school filled with Class K's outcasts. The school's leadership was historically unstable, featuring various deputy heads including the ruthless Isobel Pickwell and the cruel Professor Celia Green. Wickers also had to navigate the presence of his own father, Martin, who served as a deputy head.
The show's impact was immediate; its first episode broke the BBC Three record for the highest viewing figure for a comedy premiere. The series saw significant experimentation with distribution, such as in 2013 when the second series premiered on BBC iPlayer a week before its television broadcast. This digital-first approach was highly successful, with the first episode of the second series garnering 1.5 million requests before it even aired on television. The show's popularity was even reflected in its film release, which was handled by the same distributors behind The Inbetweeners Movie.
After the original run concluded in 2014, the franchise underwent a major transformation. A 2015 feature film took the characters to Cornwall, earning approximately $3.1 million at the box office. Following a tenth-anniversary reunion special in late 2022, the series was revived with a new cast of teachers. Former pupils Stephen Carmichael and Mitchell Harper returned to Abbey Grove to lead a new cohort of Class K, under the leadership of headmistress Bernadette Hoburn, while the original headteacher, Simon Fraser, transitioned to a role in the school canteen. The new generation of students includes the social media-focused Usma and the scam-running Blessing. Meanwhile, the former headteacher Fraser now serves as the school's cook.
