How a Florida shopping center evolved into a massive hub for contemporary art and retail
In short: Aventura Mall is more than just a retail destination. As the largest mall in Florida, it attracts up to 32 million visitors annually. Beyond its 300 stores and 50 dining venues, the property functions as a sprawling gallery, housing over 25 museum-quality art installations and sculptures for public enjoyment.
Dedicated in April 1983 by the Oxford Development Company, the original 1.2-million-square-foot complex was anchored by major retailers including Lord & Taylor, JCPenney, Sears, and Macy's. The project was led by partners such as Donald Soffer and Edward J. Lewis, with Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. serving as an original investor. Following a corporate restructuring, Soffer’s firm, Turnberry Associates, took control of the property, while Simon Property Group eventually acquired the interest once held by DeBartolo.
The mall has undergone continuous evolution through strategic expansions. Significant additions occurred in 1997 and 1999, followed by a $20 million renovation in 2006 and a 241,000-square-foot expansion wing in 2017. By 2025, the owners acquired the adjacent Esplanade at Aventura for $131 million, rebranding it as The Abbey at Aventura. This growth has attracted a diverse array of luxury brands, including Hermès, Prada, and Dior, alongside first-to-market concepts like Eataly and the first United States location for Bershka.
A defining feature of the property is the Arts Aventura Mall program, established by Jackie Soffer. This collection integrates contemporary works by renowned artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Robert Indiana, and Carsten Höller directly into the shopping environment. Visitors can engage with these pieces, including the 93-foot-tall Aventura Slide Tower, via a self-guided audio tour. This fusion of commerce and culture is further supported by the Brightline Aventura Station, which opened in December 2022 to improve accessibility to the site.
