The most underrated lyricist ever: how AZ built a hip-hop legacy
In short: While some rappers chase immediate fame, AZ spent decades perfecting a craft often cited as the gold standard of lyricism. From his early days at Eli Whitney High School with Jay-Z to his role in the mafioso rap movement, his career is a masterclass in artistic endurance.
Born in Brooklyn in 1972, Anthony Cruz began writing lyrics at the age of 12. He attended Eli Whitney High School alongside future superstar Jay-Z before the vocational school closed in the late 1980s. His early career was defined by a pivotal friendship with Nas, who invited him into the studio to work on the landmark album Illmatic in the early 1990s. This collaboration paved the way for AZ's debut studio album, Doe or Die, released in 1995 under EMI Records.
Doe or Die is historically significant for popularizing the 'mafioso rap' theme, a stylistic shift that influenced major releases by Jay-Z and Nas. While the album received critical acclaim, its lead single "Sugar Hill" was its most commercially successful track, peaking at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning a Gold certification from the RIAA in September 1995. AZ also became a core member of the group The Firm in 1996, which reached the top of the Billboard 200 chart in 1997 despite mixed critical reviews.
Despite being labeled by outlets like About.com as one of the "Most Underrated Rappers of All Time," AZ has maintained a prolific output across multiple labels, including Noo Trybe, Virgin, Motown, and his own imprint, Quiet Money Records. His discography spans a diverse range of collaborations with icons like Dr. Dre, Kanye West, and Ghostface Killah. Most recently, he released Truth Be Told in 2023 and Doe or Die III in 2026, continuing a career that prioritizes complex production and lyrical integrity over fleeting trends.
AZ's work is often characterized by its technical complexity. Critics have noted that his albums, such as Aziatic, are "carefully crafted" rather than assembled quickly, featuring inventive beats that suit his specific rhyming style. His ability to hold his own alongside heavyweights like Nas while maintaining a distinct identity is a primary reason for his enduring reputation among hip-hop purists.
