In short: As Nepal's most populous province, Bagmati is a land of extreme contrasts. From the high Himalayan tundra to subtropical southern plains, its rugged topography supports everything from alpine forests to bustling urban centers like Kathmandu. It is a region defined by its rivers, its history, and its immense economic importance.

Bagmati Province serves as the economic and political engine of Nepal. As of 2019, the province contributed 36.8% of the national GDP, with a total value of NPR 1.43 trillion. This economic weight is anchored by its status as the country's most industrialized province and its role as a primary educational hub. The region's population density is 300 people per square kilometer, making it the second most densely populated area in the country.

The province's identity is deeply tied to the Bagmati River, which flows through the Kathmandu valley and is considered the source of Newar civilization and urbanization. Historically, the region was known as Nepalmandal during the Licchavi and Malla periods, ruled by Newar kings. In 1956, a grouping of five districts known as Kathmandu Kshetra was established, which had a population of 1.7 million people and covered 15,910 km2.

The landscape is defined by dramatic elevation shifts, ranging from 141 meters at Golaghat in the Chitwan District to 7,422 meters at Ganesh Himal. This topography creates diverse climatic zones, from arctic tundra in the High Himalaya above 5,000 meters to subtropical zones in the Siwalik region. This variety supports diverse ecosystems, including deciduous, coniferous, and alpine forests, with 27.29% of the land covered by forest.

Cultural diversity is a hallmark of the province, which is home to many communities including the Thami, Newar, Tamang, Sherpa, Tharu, Chepang, Jirel, Brahmin, and Chhetri. The Tamang people constitute the largest ethnic group at approximately 19.89% of the population. While Nepali is the most common mother tongue at 56.04%, the Language Commission has recommended Tamang and Nepal Bhasa as official languages for the province.
