In short: Endemic to Siberia's Lake Baikal, the Baikal seal is one of the world's few exclusively freshwater pinnipeds. These resilient animals have survived for two million years, navigating extreme seasonal shifts and unique foraging challenges, all while maintaining a population that currently sits at the lake's estimated carrying capacity.

The Baikal seal, or nerpa, represents a biological curiosity. While most seals are marine, the nerpa is strictly freshwater, likely descending from Arctic ringed seals that migrated inland during prehistoric ice ages. They have inhabited Lake Baikal for approximately two million years, potentially reaching the basin via ancient waterways like the Paratethys Sea. Today, they remain the only pinniped species endemic to this specific Siberian lake.

Survival in a closed, cold-water ecosystem requires specialized adaptations. Nerpas are master divers, capable of staying submerged for over 40 minutes—and up to 70 minutes when threatened—thanks to an unusually high blood volume. Their diet is equally specialized; they consume massive quantities of the oil-rich golomyanka fish. Interestingly, they also engage in a unique form of self-medication: in autumn, they hunt Kessler's sculpin in silty areas, using the ingested grit to scour their digestive tracts and expel parasites.

The species faces a complex future. While currently listed as Least Concern with a population of 80,000 to 100,000, they are vulnerable to environmental stressors. Past epidemics, such as the 1987–1988 mortality event that claimed up to 6,500 seals, have been linked to pollutants like DDT and PCBs weakening their immune systems. Furthermore, global warming poses a significant long-term threat to the stability of their icy habitat. Despite these pressures, the nerpa remains a testament to evolutionary persistence, with individuals occasionally living past the age of 50.
