In short: The Baháʼí World Centre in Haifa and Acre serves as the global administrative hub for millions. Its location is not a matter of choice but a legacy of 19th-century exile. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site balances its role as a sacred pilgrimage destination with a unique, self-imposed isolation.

The Baháʼí World Centre exists in Israel due to the successive banishments of the religion's founder, Baháʼu'lláh. After being exiled from Persia in 1853, he was moved through the Ottoman Empire, eventually arriving as a prisoner in Acre in 1868. He spent the remainder of his life in the region, establishing it as the focal point for his expanding global network. His son, ʻAbdu'l-Bahá, later moved to Haifa following his own release from imprisonment in 1908, solidifying the city as the administrative headquarters.

The site is defined by its architectural and spiritual significance, particularly the Shrine of the Báb on Mount Carmel. Baháʼu'lláh indicated the location of this shrine and the administrative centre in his Tablet of Carmel, a foundational document. Under the leadership of Shoghi Effendi, the site was transformed into an arc of monumental buildings, including the Universal House of Justice, which serves as the supreme governing body of the faith. These institutions, completed between 1982 and 2000, coordinate global teaching plans and the translation of holy writings.

Despite attracting about one million visitors annually, the Baháʼí World Centre maintains a distinct separation from local Israeli society. Baháʼís observe a strict, long-standing policy of not teaching their faith to the local population, and there is no formal Baháʼí community within Israel. While the site is praised for its aesthetic beauty and economic contributions to Haifa, its expansion has occasionally sparked tension with residents over access control and urban planning. Today, the centre functions as a quiet, highly managed nexus of international governance, staffed by hundreds of volunteers from over sixty countries who remain largely detached from the surrounding city.
