In short: Emerging from the Bábí movement in Iran, the Baháʼí Faith seeks to unify humanity by abolishing prejudice. Founded by Bahāʾu’llāh, this universalist religion rejects clergy and ritual, focusing instead on social ethics and the conviction that all great world religions share an identical, divine truth.

The Baháʼí Faith originated in 1844 with Mīrzā ʿAlī Moḥammad of Shīrāz, who assumed the title of the Bāb, or 'Gateway.' His teachings, rooted in Twelver Shiʿi Islam, anticipated the arrival of a new messenger of God. Following the Bāb’s execution in 1850 and subsequent state-led persecutions, his follower Mīrzā Ḥosayn ʿAlī Nūrī—known as Bahāʾu’llāh—declared his own divine mission in 1863 while in Baghdad. This declaration transformed the majority of Bābīs into Bahāʾīs.

Bahāʾu’llāh’s teachings emphasize the oneness of humanity and the essential unity of all religions, viewing founders of major faiths as manifestations of a single divine plan. The religion is distinct for its lack of priesthood and sacraments. Instead, it relies on a community-based structure where local spiritual assemblies manage affairs without political parties or campaigning. Worship in Bahāʾí houses of worship is non-preachy, focusing on the recitation of scriptures from various traditions.

Following Bahāʾu’llāh’s death in 1892, leadership passed to his son, ʿAbd al-Bahāʾ, who expanded the faith globally. His grandson, Shoghi Effendi, later guided the community until 1957. Today, the faith is governed by the Universal House of Justice, first elected in 1963. Despite facing intense persecution in Iran since 1979, the community has grown to include over 180 national spiritual assemblies, with 14 houses of worship currently established across the globe, from Australia to Vanuatu.
