In short: On the shores of Tenerife, the Basilica of Candelaria stands as a testament to cultural fusion. What began as a mysterious discovery by indigenous Guanches in 1390 has evolved into a major pilgrimage site, where Catholic tradition meets Hindu influence and the echoes of pre-Hispanic history.

The story of the Basilica of Candelaria begins in 1390, when two Guanche herders discovered a statue of the Virgin on a beach. Initially, the indigenous people identified the figure as their own goddess, Chaxiraxi, the mother of the gods. The statue was housed in the cave of Chinguaro, the palace of the king of Güímar, before being moved to the cave of Achbinico. This site served as a sanctuary and later as a cemetery for Christian devotees, marking the beginning of a long, syncretic history.

The current structure, designed by architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado, is a neo-Canarian eclectic masterpiece. Construction was repeatedly delayed by the economic crisis of 1931, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II. It was finally consecrated on February 1, 1959. Today, the basilica holds the status of a minor basilica, a title bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011. It serves as the primary Catholic pilgrimage center in the Canary Islands, attracting over 2.5 million visitors annually.

The basilica is a space of remarkable inclusivity. While it remains a central hub for Catholic devotion—housing the black Madonna statue in the Camarín de la Virgen—it also welcomes followers of other faiths. The Hindu community in Tenerife, for instance, has donated robes for the statue and participates in an annual intercultural festival. From the penitential Chapel of the Holy Christ of Reconciliation, inspired by the Shroud of Turin, to the mural-filled altar, the basilica functions as a living archive of the islands' diverse spiritual heritage.
